Radioactive ion beam production system for the SPIRAL2 project

Résumé

The SPIRAL2 projec is currently under construction at GANIL and will allow to use high intensity deuteron or heavy ion beams to perform physic experiments or to produce radioactive ion beams that could be accelerated by the present CIME cyclotron and distributed in the existing experimental areas of GANIL.. This contribution will focus on the technical description of the apparatus dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams. Three different ways of production are under studies for the radioactive atoms production: The neutron induced fission of Uranium carbide The direct interaction of deuterons in a uranium carbide target The interaction of a heavy ion beam with a target All these production systems will be coupled to an ion source. Four kind of ions sources are foreseen for the ionization of the radioactive atoms: an ECR ion source, a surface ionization ion source, a FEBIAD ion source and a laser ion source depending on the characteristics of the desired radioactive ion beam in terms of intensity, efficiency, purity... A presentation of these production systems coupling the different ways of production to the different ways of ionization will be made.
