Total cross section and absolute luminosity measurements for ATLAS

Abstract : The ATLAS experiment will use dedicated detectors to measure total proton-proton cross section and absolute luminosity. These detectors, located at ±240 m for the Interaction Point, will be approached at 1 or 2 mm from the beam axis. Measuring the total interaction and the elastic rates in the forward direction will allow to retrieve absolute luminosity and the total proton-proton cross section.
