Ramsauer approach to Mie scattering of light on spherical particles

Abstract : The scattering of an electromagnetic plane wave by a spherical particle was solved analytically by Gustav Mie in 1908. The Mie solution is expressed as a series with many terms thus obscuring the physical insight. The purpose of this paper is to show that when light scattering is described through the Ramsauer model, the physics gets simpler. For instance, the origin of the structures of the total cross section is unveiled and it is shown that the momentum of light inside a dielectric is greater than in vacuum.
