A Masterclass exercise based on gravitational wave data

Abstract : Following the example of the successful International Masterclasses “Hands on particle physics” (IMC) which are using LHC data, we are developing an IMC-like session based on data from the LIGO-Virgo network of interferometric gravitational wave detectors. The fact that the instruments members of this network share their data and analyze them jointly for almost a decade can be directly transposed into the existing IMC framework in which groups of high-school students, which participate to a Masterclass the same day in different institutes, combine their independent measurements during a common videoconference which ends the session. In this talk, we describe in details the new Masterclass exercise based on gravitational wave detector data and show what a typical day-long Masterclass session could look like.
