Further fundamental research on the neutrino oscillations phenomenon can be accomplished using reactor neutrinos with multiple detectors to reduce the impact of reactor flux uncertainties. Double Chooz is one of the leading experiments to explore the smallest (still unmeasured) mixing angle, the so-called theta13, of the leptonic mixing matrix (PMNS) with unprecedented sensitivity. Double Chooz is expected to be able to limit on sin^2(2theta13) to 0.03 with 90% C.L., in the case of no observation, within 5 years of data taking starting from September 2010. The experimental strategy relies on high statistics, the reduction and measurement of backgrounds contributions due to the improved detector design and the inter-detector systematic uncertainties to be understood below 1%. A summary of the experimental goals and the status of the experiment construction and commissioning will be presented.
