About the production rates and the activation of the uranium carbide target in SPIRAL 2

In the close future, the accelerator and experimental facilities at GANIL (Caen/France) will receive a new facility called SPIRAL2. It will be constituted in a superconducting linear accelerator which will drive deuterons beam of 40 MeV energy (5mA; 200kW). These accelerated particles will produce a very high neutron flux with a fast spectrum (the energy range between 1 keV and 40 MeV). With the neutron-induced fission of the depleted uranium, intense beams of neutron-rich nuclei will be created and will become available at SPIRAL2. In this work, done with a support of SAFERIB and EURONS, we will present the neutronic behaviour of the uranium target calculated with MCNPX2.6.b. The neutron flux is calculated on the target and on the near environment (it is about 1013 n.s-1.cm-2). The target is optimised to produce a global fission rate greater than 5 1013 fissions.s-1. We will show that this objective is possible to be obtained with only 2,3 kg of uranium carbide (UC2). The paper will also present a quantification of the production rates of fission products and heavy nuclei produced on the target and activities produced after irradiation (calculated with DARWIN code).
