Alpha irradiation effects in fluoroapatite and strontium titanate

Abstract

Most of the strategies investigated up to now for the immobilization of the high-level radioactive wastes are concerned with the incorporation of radioactive waste in dedicated solid matrices for a long depository-time in a deep stabilized geologic repository. Therefore, materials are needed which are chemically and thermally stable over geological periods of time. The first concern addresses directly the material behavior under radiations. The radiation effect appears as an important parameter which can affect considerably the chemical durability of the solid waste forms especially for the alpha-emitter immobilization. Apatite and perovskite structures are considered with two different damage recovery processes: alpha-self-annealing and thermal recovery.
